Ever feel like you’re working hard but still not getting anywhere? Like you’re drowning in your to-do list, yet somehow nothing important actually gets done? You’re not alone.
A lot of what we’ve been taught about productivity is wrong. In fact, some of the most common advice out there—like hustle harder or multitask like a pro—is actually making you less productive.
Let’s bust some of the biggest productivity myths that are holding you back and replace them with strategies that actually work.
“If I just work longer hours and push through, I’ll get more done.”
I used to believe this one hard. Early in my career, I prided myself on being the first one at my desk and the last one to leave. If I just kept grinding, I thought, success would follow. But you know what actually happened?
Burnout. Exhaustion. And a whole lot of spinning my wheels.
The truth is, hustling harder isn’t the key to success—working smarter is. Instead of measuring productivity by hours worked, focus on:
✔️ Prioritizing what actually moves the needle (Not just checking off tasks for the sake of being busy)
✔️ Building in rest & recovery (Your brain works better when it’s not in overdrive 24/7)
✔️ Setting clear work boundaries (So you don’t burn out before you see results)
🔹 A better approach: Instead of working more, work intentionally. Define your top 3 priorities each day and focus on those first.
“I can answer emails, listen to a podcast, and write content at the same time—it’s called efficiency!”
I hate to break it to you, but… multitasking is a lie.
Studies show that switching between tasks can actually reduce your productivity by up to 40% (!!). Your brain isn’t built to focus on multiple things at once—it’s just rapidly switching between tasks, which drains your energy and makes you less efficient.
I used to be a multitasking queen, thinking I was getting so much done. But in reality, I was constantly distracted, making more mistakes, and feeling exhausted by the end of the day.
🔹 A better approach: Try time-blocking instead. Dedicate chunks of time to one task at a time—emails, content creation, planning—and you’ll get more done faster with fewer mistakes.
“All the most successful people wake up at 5 AM, so I need to do that too.”
If you’re a morning person, great! But if you’re not, forcing yourself to wake up before the sun just because someone on Instagram said it’s the key to success is… not it.
The truth? Productivity isn’t about when you wake up—it’s about how you use your time.
I’ve tried the 5 AM club. And while it works for some, I was miserable. What actually made a difference was learning to work with my energy instead of against it.
🔹 A better approach: Find your peak productivity hours—whether that’s early morning, late at night, or somewhere in between—and structure your day around that.
“A perfect schedule = perfect productivity.”
I love a good plan, but I’ve also learned that overplanning can backfire. When your schedule is packed from morning to night, there’s no room for flexibility. And when things don’t go according to plan (because life happens), it can leave you feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.
🔹 A better approach: Instead of planning every minute, use a flexible structure:
✔️ Time-block key priorities, but leave space for adjustments
✔️ Batch similar tasks to reduce mental switching
✔️ Set daily goals instead of rigid time slots
The goal isn’t a perfect schedule—it’s a sustainable one.
“No one else can do this as well as I can, so I have to do everything.”
Raise your hand if you’ve ever thought this one! (Yep, me too.)
But here’s the reality: Trying to do everything alone is a one-way ticket to burnout. Learning to delegate—whether that’s outsourcing tasks in your business or getting help at home—is a game-changer.
🔹 A better approach: Identify 1-2 tasks that drain your energy and see if you can simplify, automate, or delegate them. (Hint: You don’t have to DIY everything!)
If you’ve been stuck in the cycle of hustling, multitasking, or overplanning, I see you. I’ve been there. But here’s the good news: Real productivity isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what matters most.
